The initial impression that registers with a collector when viewing coins is the presence or absence of Original Natural Color. It is what a collector sees as part of eye appeal and you must preserve those qualities to maintain value.
Old nickels when circulated and worn develop a pleasing silvery grey color with deeper shades in the recesses and brighter silver shades on the high points of the design. This "look" develops naturally.
Uncirculated Buffalo nickels - coins with no wear, appear lustrous with either bright mint luster or naturally toned colors over the mint luster. Some collectors prefer toned coins, others only bright ones, but all agree the coin must be natural.
Whatever has happened to your coins by now can not be taken away or undone. How you handle them from now on does help preserve their value.
Natural is the key to any coin's value. Natural wear - natural color. And the biggest enemy to the natural process is Cleaning. Cleaning coins destroys this natural beauty and appeal. Clean your 1924 nickel and you devalue it by eliminating most of the collectors who would normally be interested in the coin.
How to preserve your nickel value - handle carefully by the edges, store in a safe undisturbed place - never clean.
Uncirculated: A 1924 buffalo nickel in this condition stands out as a superior coin. It never circulated, therefore its surfaces show no signs of wear. Handel coins in Uncirculated condition by their edges to preserve their surfaces. Rotate the coin under a light, examine the cheek of the Indian and upper back of the buffalo for signs of wear, appearing as dullness on the high spots.
Extremely Fine: As a coin circulates friction begins to show as a slight loss of detail on the hair braid of the Indian and upper front leg of the Buffalo. Although wear is noticeable your nickel still appears sharp and crisp, and a desirable coin.
Fine: Fur details on the Buffalo's head have worn smooth, also a wide area from the hoof to the top of the shoulder lacks any detail. The date, one the highest parts of the design and subject to rapid wear, is readable. Hair and braid details of the Indian are lacking.
Good: The date is readable, however parts of the numbers are often merged. The rim is no longer separated from the tops of the letters. The roundness of the design to the buffalo has become flat on the hip, stomach, shoulder and head.
