1931 dime value starts with the value of its silver content, approximately $1.50 today.
Your dime however does have the very real possibility of being worth more. If you find the "D" or "S" mintmark on the reverse it immediately raises the value of your 1931 dime. Collectors assembling sets often include coins from the all the mints that produced dimes for that year. And the branch mint coins of this year are not as easy to find as those minted in Philadelphia.
Also important to value is the eye appeal of your coin, is it sharply detailed or very worn? Pictured is an uncirculated, never used 1931 dime worth $31 plus because of its outstanding condition. Judging accurately the condition of your old silver dimes separates the average coins from the best.
Your old Mercury head dime as it is known to collectors is an uncommon date to find, if minted at either Denver or San Francisco it is even more elusive and in well preserved condition a scarce coin with good value.
Causing three sets of values, different mints produced dimes for this year, two are scarce.
Starting with the rare Denver mint coin, it is identified by a "D" mintmark found on the reverse. The San Francisco mint used an "S" mintmark and Philadelphia, the main mint, did not place a mintmark on coins.

Well preserved over the many years, a past collector has provided today's collecting community a rare 1931 Mercury dime. As a result several enthusiasts eager to own the coin pushed the final price to $472 at a David Lawrence Rare Coin auction.
Gem quality status is easily seen here by the intense white luster, bold strike, and lack of marks and abrasions. All attributes present on this coin. Mercury dimes such as these are rare, seldom offered for sale and because of their popularity avidly sought. Once a coin is part of a high grade set it usually stays off the market for a long time.
Your 1931 dime and especially the branch mint examples are needed by the ever growing number of collectors. These old silver dimes even if worn, are collectible and an important addition to many sets.
The chart shows the value of a 1931 dime in "extremely fine" condition is far higher than a coin in "good" condition. Collectors and dealers are always searching for the best quality, best preserved coins. They judge the condition of each of your coins and assign a "grade." Comparing your old dimes to the images finds the accurate condition value on the chart.
Uncirculated: This Mercury dime never circulated. Untouched since minted, it shines with luster. Your coin in this condition may show toning, but underneath there is no evidence of wear. Rotated under a light, an unbroken, radiating luster rolls across the surface. An uncirculated coin is one sparkling with a freshness placing it at the top of 1931 dime value.
Extremely Fine: Of interest to collectors are many Mercury dimes in Extremely Fine condition. The slight even wear leaves the majority of the design crisp and sharp. Liberty's hair above the eye is evidently worn but just slightly, wing details are beginning to show some smoothness.
Fine: The design in the center of the coin has worn smooth with just a slight separation of the hair and wing design. Liberty's forehead and hair curls are no longer separated and the majority of the feathers have leveled into one. On the reverse the once distinct bundle of rods is now worn with few vertical lines remaining.
Good: Heavy wear has removed most of the design, leaving only Liberty's portrait in outline. Protection once afforded by the rim is now blending with the lettering. The central device on the reverse "fasces" is worn smooth, again the rim is worn significantly into the lettering.
