1908 Nickel Value

In the Liberty nickel series, 1908 nickel value reflects its "common" status. These were produced in large quantities. They also remained in circulation for a considerable amount of time. The "abundant" availability factor changes quickly to a "difficult" coin when subtle design details remain visible.

Strong premiums reflect the value of higher quality coins. Identify an accurate value on the chart when using a defined process covering all key features. The following steps help determine how much the old nickels are worth.

Step 1: Dates Form a Description and Value Placement

Image to Recognize 1908 Liberty Nickel

Minted well into the beginnings of the twentieth century. Today's coin market considers a 1908 nickel "common" on a rarity scale. However, this is a relative term. The entire production of nickels in 1908 was 22.8 million coins. All released into circulation and served for years. Heavily worn examples are in the "common" category. Nicely detailed, with eye appeal, Liberty nickels for all dates are a challenge to obtain.

1908 serves as part of an interesting collection of early coinage. Affordability draws beginning collectors to this older series of nickels. A nice starter collection often contains a 1908 example. Confirm the date to determine an accurate value.

Step 2: | Grading Detects Small Details and Accurate Quality

Details and Ample Lighting Confirm 1908 Nickel Value

Inspecting a Liberty nickel and referencing the descriptions begins the grading process. These descriptions plus images point to deciding features placing a coin within a narrow grade range. These levels of condition are defined terms and known grades within the hobby. For example, hobbyists expect a Fine grade nickel to display the letters "Liberty" within the headband. Additionally, specific elements of the design are then closely judged for an accurate reading of condition.

Begin with a close match of condition comparing to images of different grades. Details of design elements visibly required are then described, starting with major features. Smaller, finer points are next confirmed to determine a specific grade.

When grading, set up a single light source. One light creates strong shadows on these small coin designs. Any faint separations and heights in the design begin to appear because of the contrasting light and shadows.

Mint State Grade

1908 Liberty Nickel in Mint State Grade

Mint State: When a Liberty nickel is in Mint State condition, its surface is free of any wear. In this top-quality condition, this is an extremely important factor. Taking a closer look at these nickels, you can see many fine details with high contours and low recesses. These small elements aid in judging faint to obvious wear.

The height of the hair tied at the back of Liberty's head in relation to the rest of the design is a key feature. High-profile hair strands with intricate detail are the first to show signs of wear. Place the coin under a single light and focus on the top edges of the hair strands. Wear diminishes the metal's luster and shows as small areas of smooth flatness.

The very small details of the wheat grains, part of the design above Liberty's headband, also help identify the highest quality mint condition. All the luster and roundness of these tiny grains is well preserved. Wheat grains tend to show even the slightest amount of deterioration from circulation. Fully rounded grains, without flatness, indicate a surface without wear. This is a significant grade for coin collectors and the coin market.

Extremely Fine Grade

Liberty Nickel in Extremely Fine Grade Condition

Extremely Fine: Judging a Liberty nickel within the Extremely Fine grade identifies a large shift in both value and demand by collectors. This grade is characterized by many visible details, particularly the finer lines in Liberty's hair. A few hair strands above her forehead are just showing some blending. Also, a slight amount of fading of detail above her ear indicates this light wear condition. Each area of smooth metal, above the forehead and around the ear, remains separate of each other. There are no widespread worn surface areas.

To meet the quality, her headband displays complete lettering of LIBERTY. Letters are boldly impressed, top to bottom. When key design features, like parts of lettering, are absent, this indicates a lower level of quality. In addition, a complete hairline from the forehead to the ear is a crucial requirement for the grade.

Raised and rounded contours of Liberty's cheek and neck region are not significantly changed. Notice the surface shows a smooth, slightly worn appearance. These open, unprotected areas remain well raised and contoured.

Fine Grade

Condition of a Fine Grade Liberty Nickel

Fine Grade: Coin hobbyist recognize a few distinguishing characteristics of Liberty nickels in Fine grade condition. A noticeable amount of wear offset by the obvious presence of small details. The level of wear on this condition nickel is starting to merge important features. Furthermore, even in protected areas, minor and small details begin to flatten and lose their crispness.

Appearance of significant wear on these nickels, as seen in the example image, is a notable feature of their condition. Liberty's hair just below the headband, a major feature, is now a flattened area with no separation line to her forehead. Circulation wear has reduced the metal so that it is now flat and smooth from her forehead to her ear. Additionally, the tie of Liberty's hair worn at the back of her head is now a flat area. Each of the three sections now lacks any inner details.

Despite the extent of wear, the Fine condition does display a few appealing qualities. First, and necessary for the grade, each individual letter of "LIBERTY" within the headband remains readable. Notable, the "I" located at a high point on the metal, is less strong when compared to the other letters. To meet the Fine grade standards, all letters are easily readable. Secondly, there are some lines within the waves of her hair in the area from the ear towards the back of her head.

Good Grade

Example Liberty Nickel in Good Grade

Good Grade: The Good grade assigned to a Liberty nickel indicates the coin has been heavily worn. It is important to note that four major features appear bold and visible in this condition. There is a certain appeal to these coins, as they are not worn-out in appearance.

Liberty's portrait is first to inspect and judge. On the coin imaged, her portrait is clearly defined, completely separate, and raised above the field. In addition, the boldness of her outline is balanced from front to back. Occasionally, weak areas are a noted trait of these nickels. Liberty's outline becomes weak towards the back of her head. Second, a complete date is shown, without any numbers fading or blending into the field.

The next two requirements are the stars' completeness and condition of the rim. There are thirteen complete stars visible. Secondly, the inner edge of the rim is fully raised with no merging with stars or field. Displayed on the example, the star points and rim are completely separated, a required feature to qualify as Good grade.

There is a tendency for these nickels to have weak design impressions in certain areas. A quality coin for the grade is a nickel that displays remaining elements boldly. A combination of a complete outline of Liberty, complete stars, rim, and date has eye appeal.

Step 3: | Special Qualities | Grading Method to Recognize Quality

Identify Premium Liberty Nickels when Grading Condition

Grading the condition of the Liberty nickel series is quickly becoming a key factor when determining how much they are worth. Many dates, especially the early years from 1883 to 1899, are now quite valuable in moderate to light wear condition. Recognizing the subtle differences between grades is now monetarily significant. Detecting and then judging wear patterns on Liberty nickels are then rated into a grade.

When inspecting the coin, a defined method is followed. Careful handling, lighting the coin, viewing procedure, and when needed, magnification.

Careful Handling When handling old coins, begin to intentionally hold them by the edges. Clean hands, and coins held only by the edges, keeps the coin's surface intact. At this point keep higher quality/condition nickels separated from the rest. These upper grade examples benefit from placing them in individual holders. Lighting As coins wear, details, both major and minor, become faded and less distinct. A single light source close to the coin brings out the more subtle features remaining. By slowly tilting the coin and changing the angle of reflected light, shadows and contrast develop and help define minor details.

Viewing Procedure Inspect the coin in three steps. First, the obverse of the coin, the portrait side. An overall view of important features includes the portrait and devices, field of the coin, and it raised rim. Judge these for condition and any standout distractions or damage. Next is the reverse; the devices, field, and rim are inspected for condition. And lastly, the edge of the coin. Liberty nickels feature a plain edge with a smooth surface. Note any noticeable marks, indents, or damage. Spend as much time as needed in the evaluation, inspecting all three elements; the obverse, reverse, and edge.

Magnification At times a clear close-up view helps fully confirm small details. The amount of fine hair strand detail, lettering of the headband, and areas of merging become visible when magnified. A 3x power to 7x power magnification is suitable. View the coin in its entirety with the unaided eye, giving a first impression. Magnification becomes the aid in a final grade and condition decision.
